The German translation of Salzburg is literally Salt Fortress and it really is all about the salt. A trip to Salzburg can not be complete without the compulsory visit to a Salt Mine. Although there are several to choose from, the closest is Saltzwelten Hallein. 2500 years ago the Celts were already mining “white gold” in the Bad Dürrnberg mountain and this family fun destination will not disappoint.
Start by dressing in a traditional salt mining suit, then wind your way through a bevy of tunnels with salt themed multi media productions and salty fun facts around every corner. The highlight will be gliding down wooden slides used by ancient salt miners to get from one level of the mine to the next. For added amusement there is a reconstructed Celtic village nearby to give you a glimpse into the everyday life of the Celtic people. Be warned children under the age of four will be turned away at the door so best to leave them at Omi’s haus!
