The great Bosna vs Kebap debate

If I weren’t convinced there is something necessarily civil about sitting down to a proper meal, I would happily eat all of my meals in Salzburg standing on a street corner. Two of the most delicious Austrian “street foods” are the Bosna and the Kebap but the debate is fierce over which is best.

For a Bosna there is really only one place to go, the original Balkan Grill. Tucked in a tiny passageway leading from the Geitreidegasse, for 50 years the Balkan Grill has likely had a line day and night. Emerging from a kitchen the size of a postage stamp, wrap your taste buds around two pork sausages slathered in mustard, onions and parsley then dusted with a secret combination of curry spice. For an extra couple of Euro you can buy a can of beer and “PRESTO” lunch is served!

Finding the best Kebap in town may prove more difficult. Ever since Hansl’s favorite Kebap stand turned into a hamburger joint (seriously?) we have been on the hunt for a replacement. With Turkish roots, Kebap can be found all over town grilling in tiny shops on vertical rotisseries. Piled high with onions, lettuce, tomatoes and a fragrant yogurt sauce you can get the thinly shaved meat on either a bun (Kebap) or rolled into a flatbread (Durum). The other day in our never ending search for a replacement to Sabah’s, we stopped into the Mozart Cafe and we weren’t disappointed.   The search for the best Kebap in Salzburg however, continues. As far as the debate goes, nothing wrong with having a Bosna for lunch and a Kebap for dinner!
